The Town of Riverhead, with extensive efforts from various Town Departments and the Public, recently adopted the 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update. The Comprehensive Plan, also known as the Master Plan, is a document designed to guide the future actions of our town. It presents a vision for the future, with long-range goals and objectives for all activities that affect our government. This includes guidance on how to make decisions on public and private land development proposals, cooperative efforts, and issues of pressing concern, such as farmland preservation, sustainable development, or the rehabilitation of older neighborhood areas. Code revisions and amendments consistent with the recommendations of the 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update are currently underway.
Other upcoming projects include the redevelopment plan envisioned for Downtown Riverhead. The revitalization of this area includes the implementation of goals identified by prior studies and public engagement. A Town Square will be developed into Upper and Lower Town Squares, terraced with landscaped public spaces and adjoining the Children's Adaptive Playground, all of which will be raised to provide flood mitigation. Planned developments compatible with the Town Square (hotel, amphitheater, East End Arts property improvement) will contribute to activation and will be engineered with components with the overall Flood Mitigation Plan. The culmination of prior studies and designs, grants, and coordination with the Town Board, Community Development Agency, the Planning Department, consultants, and other Town Departments and agencies has brought the Town closer to achieving the aforementioned goals. Groundbreaking on the start of these projects is expected in the near future, once all applicable environmental reviews have been completed.
