The Town or Riverhead, in collaboration with Suffolk County’s Office of Emergency Management, is currently in the process of updating the Suffolk County Hazardous Mitigation Plan.
A Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) is a community’s plan for reducing the long-term risk from disasters—before they happen, not just reacting after. The plan identifies hazards, assesses risk and vulnerability to the public, homes, infrastructure and how impacts could be. The plan defines what the community wants to protect and improve such as Public Safety, property, critical services, economic stability. It recommends actions such as improving drainage systems and elevating or flood proofing buildings to name a few. The plan prioritizes projects and an approved Hazard Mitigation Plan is required to qualify for FEMA hazard mitigation grants.
The Town is asking for the public to participate in this process by completing an online survey. The survey is designed for residents, business owners, and community members to share firsthand experiences with hazards and provide feedback on resilience and preparedness.
