Highway Department Mission Statement

The Highway Department provides maintenance and improvement to approximately 230 miles of Town roads. Some responsibilities of the Highway Department include maintenance of town equipment, roads, traffic lines, installation of traffic and street signs, brush control along roadways, street cleaning, catch basins and storm water drains, snow and ice control, resurfacing, and sealing of streets. It is our mission to efficiently manage and maintain the town's roadway system to provide for the safe, convenient, and efficient movement of traffic and pedestrians at the lowest cost and best value.

The Highway Department consists of 32 full-time employees, downsized since 1984 from 47. The Department has at its disposal approximately 100 major pieces of equipment with attachments (etc.). The amount of equipment used by the Highway Department is a result of the variety of types of work undertaken. See what we do each season.

The Highway Department is a professional team dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Riverhead and supporting the town's core values. We make every effort to maximize the efficient, effective use of our resources in the support, maintenance, and upkeep of the infrastructure. Please Note: Call the Highway Department before putting anything in the grassy area adjacent to the edge of the roadway in front of your property. This area is Town property, and is frequently used in the event that work needs to be done by the Highway Department or any Utility Company. (Keyspan, etc.).
